Length and weight cover the metric and imperial units people actually swap between; area includes acres and hectares for land; volume separates US and UK gallons, which differ by about twenty per cent and cause real confusion in recipes.

Temperature is the one category that is not a simple ratio, and it is the one converters most often get wrong. Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin have different zero points as well as different scales, so multiplying by a factor turns 0°C into 0°F instead of 32°F. It is handled separately here, with its own arithmetic.

The data category distinguishes the two meanings of a megabyte. A megabyte defined as a million bytes and a mebibyte defined as 1,048,576 are both in common use — the first by storage manufacturers, the second by operating systems — and the gap between them is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB. Both are listed explicitly rather than merged.

The time category converts between seconds, minutes, hours and days exactly, and offers months and years as averages, since a month has no fixed length. Anything that needs the real calendar belongs in the date difference calculator instead.
