BMI is a rough screening measure, not a diagnosis. It takes no account of muscle, frame size, age or sex, so a very muscular person reads as overweight on it and someone with little muscle can read as healthy while carrying too much fat. Some health bodies also use lower thresholds for people of South Asian descent. Talk to a doctor rather than acting on this number.

About the BMI Calculator

Body mass index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It was devised in the nineteenth century as a way of describing populations, not individuals, and that origin explains both why it is still used and why it is so often misleading about any particular person.

What it does well is give a quick, cheap screening figure across a large group. What it cannot do is distinguish muscle from fat, account for frame size, or adjust for age or sex. A well-trained athlete routinely reads as overweight or obese on it while carrying very little body fat, and someone with little muscle can sit comfortably in the healthy band while carrying too much.

There is also a population caveat worth knowing. Several health bodies apply lower thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese and other Asian descent, because the health risks associated with a given BMI appear at a lower number. The standard bands shown here are the general international ones.

The calculator accepts metric or imperial input and shows which band the result falls in, along with the weight range that would place your height in the healthy band — which is usually the more actionable figure.

Nothing you enter is transmitted. Height and weight are personal, and there is no reason for a website to receive them.

How to use the BMI Calculator

  1. Choose your units

Metric for centimetres and kilograms, imperial for feet, inches and pounds. Both give the same result.

  2. Enter height and weight

The BMI appears immediately, along with the band it falls into.

  3. Look at the band chart

Your band is highlighted against the standard ranges, so you can see how close you are to the next one.

  4. Read the healthy range

The weight range for your height that would sit in the healthy band is usually more useful than the index itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?
The standard international bands put 18.5 to 24.9 as healthy weight, below 18.5 as underweight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or above as obese. These are population guidelines rather than individual diagnoses.
Why does BMI say I am overweight when I am fit?
Because it cannot tell muscle from fat. Muscle is considerably denser, so a muscular person weighs more for their height and reads higher on BMI despite carrying little fat. This is the measure's best-known and most legitimate criticism.
Are the thresholds the same for everyone?
No. Several health authorities use lower cut-offs for people of South Asian and East Asian descent, because the associated health risks appear at a lower BMI. Thresholds also differ for children, who are assessed on percentile charts rather than fixed bands.
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Someone 1.75 m tall weighing 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75), which is 22.9. Imperial input is converted to metric first.
Should I act on this number?
Not on its own. BMI is a screening measure that indicates whether a conversation is worth having, not a diagnosis. Waist measurement, body composition and general health matter more, and a doctor can interpret all of them together.
Is my height and weight sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens entirely in your browser and nothing is transmitted or stored. Health measurements are personal and there is no reason for a website to receive them.
