Tipping is not customary everywhere. In much of India a service charge is often already on the bill, in Japan tipping can cause offence, and in parts of the United States staff are paid on the assumption of 15 to 20%. Check the bill before adding anything.
About the Tip Calculator
Splitting a bill is simple arithmetic that becomes strangely difficult at the end of a meal. This does it in one screen: the bill, the tip percentage, how many people, and what each person owes.
The rounding option rounds the total rather than the tip, because that is what people actually do when settling up — you round the amount payable to something convenient and whatever lands on the tip is the tip. Rounding the tip first and then adding it gives a total that is still awkward, which defeats the purpose.
Tipping norms vary enormously and it is worth knowing where you are. In much of India a service charge is frequently already on the bill and a further tip is optional. In Japan tipping can cause offence. In the United States, restaurant staff are often paid on the assumption of 15 to 20%, so leaving nothing has a real effect on someone's income. The presets here span that range rather than assuming one country's convention.
Everything is calculated in your browser as you type.
