About the Image Cropper

Cropping is the one edit that improves almost every photograph: take away what is not the subject and what remains gets stronger. It is also the edit most often demanded by something else — a profile picture that has to be square, a banner that has to be 16:9, a form that wants a particular shape.

Drag the corners to select any rectangle, or pick one of the aspect presets to snap to a shape and keep it while you move the selection around. Rule-of-thirds guides sit inside the selection, because placing the subject on a third rather than dead centre is the single easiest way to make a photo look composed.

The crop is taken from the original image at full resolution, not from the preview you are looking at. Selecting a quarter of a twelve-megapixel photo gives you a three-megapixel image, not a scaled-down copy of what was on screen — which is what several browser croppers quietly hand you.

Output goes to JPG, PNG or WebP. Cropping itself throws nothing away beyond the pixels you removed, but saving as JPG re-encodes what is left, so pick PNG if the image is a screenshot or a graphic with text in it.

Everything happens on your device. The photo is never uploaded, which is worth knowing before cropping a passport scan or an ID document — a common enough reason to want a cropper.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce the resolution?
Only in the sense that a smaller area contains fewer pixels. The crop is taken from the original file, not from the on-screen preview, so what remains is exactly as detailed as it was in the source image.
What size should a profile picture be?
Square, and at least 400×400. Most platforms display it as a circle, so keep the face away from the very edge — a 1:1 crop with a little room around the subject survives any shape of mask.
Can I crop to an exact pixel size?
This tool crops to a shape rather than to exact dimensions. Crop to the right aspect ratio here, then use the image resizer to hit a specific pixel size — doing it in that order avoids distorting the picture.
What are the lines inside the selection?
Rule-of-thirds guides. Placing your subject on one of the lines or intersections, rather than exactly in the middle, is the oldest and most reliable composition rule there is.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The file is read and cropped entirely in your browser. That matters if you are cropping a document, an ID or anything else you would not hand to a stranger.
